Essentially the key to an enjoyable trip is having comfortable and dry feet. Choosing the right footwear is critical. The sandals, shoes or boots that are chosen must be comfortable, durable and supportive. Footwear should be purchased and broken in well in advance, thus helping to prevent any blisters or discomfort while travelling. If travelling in a wet area consider purchasing footwear with a waterproof membrane, which will keep your feet dry.
When selecting any footwear, a good fit is imperative for durability and comfort? Ongoing comfort and the well being of your feet. Many women will fit a unisex model but typically a boot, shoe or sandal in a "women's fit" will have a number of common features based on the shape of the female foot and may even contain technologies tailored to the different walking stride women take.
Common Features to accommodate a woman's foot shape are:
1. More pronounced foot arch - provides greater support and stability and avoids forward slipping.
2. Narrower heel – assists in preventing blisters from heel rubbing and increases lateral stability and sensitivity.
3. Lower overall shoe volume - for a more supportive and stable fit.
4. Narrower instep – gives a more supportive fit for the female foot.
Boots are available in mid-cut, light weight styles through to high-cut, mid weight styles. All offering your feet and ankles different levels of protection. Most boots include a waterproof membrane such as VaporTEC®, Gore-TEX® or eVent® to ensure that regardless of the environment your feet will remain dry.
Shoes are available in as many styles as there are places to visit, a light, comfortable pair of shoes is essential for every traveller. Styles range from lightweight, urban shoes with good looks in mind for long days looking at museums and sampling local food, through to very stable, protective, waterproof styles that will take the adventure traveller out of villages, towns and cities and onto a walking track.
Sandals are available in synthetic styles (suited for use in or around water) and leather styles (suited for use in dry conditions). Within these two broad categories there are many different styles that will suit any person’s specific needs. Generally any traveller who is intending to spend time in Arid, Mediterranean and certainly Tropical climates should take a pair of sandals with them.
